Cumpriram-se no dia 12 de Setembro 12 anos sobre a detenção dos Cinco patriotas cubanos em prisões norte-americanas. A data tem sido aproveitada para fazer crescer o coro de protestos contra a detenção e condenação injusta daqueles antiterroristas, cujo único «crime» foi o de tentarem evitar acções terroristas contra Cuba desencadeadas a partir de Miami.
No dia 11 de Setembro, um grupo de artistas dos EUA, encabeçado por Danny Glover e Edward Asner, e onde se incluíam, entre outros, Susan Sarandon, Oliver Stone, Martin Sheen, Pete Seeger, Ry Cooder, Bonnie Raitt, Crissie Hynde, Haskell Wexler, Graham Nash ou Jackson Browne, lançou um apelo aos colegas norte-americanos para que subscrevam uma carta, a enviar ao presidente Barack Obama, onde se exige a libertação imediata de Fernando Gonzalez, Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labañino e Rene Gonzalez.
A military coup has taken place in Honduras on Sunday, June 28, led by School of the Americas (SOA) graduate Romeo Vasquez. Members of the Honduran military surrounded the presidential palace and forced the democratically elected president, Manuel Zelaya, into custody. He was immediately flown to Costa Rica.
